Dear Sheep Farmer,

Do you require your female sheep Scrapie Genotyping?

If so we at OVIGENE LTD can provide a cost effective solution that DOES NOT require blood sampling and additional Veterinary costs.

How does it work?

You contact Ovigene Ltd by any one of the methods below and tell us the number of animals you wish to test.
We send you out the instructions, specialized swab kit, sample labels, sample form and our laboratory address.
You then catch the sheep, “mouth it” like the judge does at the show and rub the swab firmly around the top lip.
Break off the swab into the tube, label it and write that label on to the sample sheet with the animal details.
Once you have sampled all your sheep then send the labelled samples to our accredited laboratory.

The patented DNA extraction methodology takes place at the lab where we select the codon markers and derive the scrapie genotype. This is then validated against our database of scrapie genotypes and recorded in the laboratory archives. In all this takes about 10 working days.

From the animal identification provided by you we will then provide a certificate stating the sample data number,
Breed, sex of animal and its pedigree registration number.

We do not place an EID bolus in the sheep as we have the DNA sample and should there be any dispute we have the DNA of the animal and the identification provided by the owner at the time.

How much does it cost?

For Scrapie Genotyping the rates as of the 1st July 2007 are as follows:

• Number of animals 1-8 £14.75 + VAT per animal
• Number of animals 9-32 £13.75 + VAT per animal
• Number of animals 32 + £p.o.a

At various times of the year we do have promotions and prices are subject to change.

What other services do we offer?

As well as the Scrapie genotyping we do parental genotyping of progeny so if your flirtatious ewe jumped into the ram pen last year and has the best lamb we can prove who the father is! As new genetic markers are discovered we will also be able to test for them in the same manner.
